What's included in the course?
MODULE 1
Engagement and Relaxation
All training starts with a relaxed horse that is focused on you. This module contains the foundations of training and includes the following lessons:
- Assessing and altering emotional level
- How your horse learns and how to break lessons down
- The use of combined reinforcement
- Working with the anxious horse and how to get relaxation
- The Engagement Zone and how to keep your horse focused on you
- Horse posture - teaching a light soft frame
At the end of this module, you will have a horse that is relaxed and learning in the engagement zone. Your horse will travel in frame and be ready to begin Module 2.
MODULE 2
Moving the shoulders and saddling up
Now that your horse can travel in frame, is relaxed and focused on you, it's time to start moving the feet where we want them to go. In these lessons, you’ll learn:
- Shoulder control from the ground and saddle
- Same-rein-same-foot and reverse arc
- Teaching your horse to move their hips to the fence for safe mounting
- Side-pass on the ground
- First saddling - great for OTT horses, changing disciplines or cold-backed horses
You’ll finish this module with a horse that stands quietly at the mounting block and with power steering on the shoulders.
MODULE 3
Long-reining and short-reining
Long-reining, done well, is probably the best tool a trainer has. In these lessons, you’ll learn:
- How to long-rein your horse to teach relaxation, travel in frame and transitions
- Long-reining is a great place to fix problems and build top-line muscle
- Short-reining is the step between groundwork and riding, essential for a safe and happy ride
- This module is essential for your OTT horse
These important lessons give your horse the opportunity to learn to relax and stay in frame in all gaits.
MODULE 4
The first few rides
When your horse first comes off the track, the first few rides are important. In this module, you’ll learn:
- Why OTT first rides are different
- How long the rides should take
- What to do with your horse on the first few rides
- What you should expect your horse to be able to do at this stage of training
The importance of the first few rides is often overlooked with OTT horses because we assume the horse is 'already started' so we can jump on and go. However, they need to be managed properly to set your horse up for the very best riding career, regardless of his/her age or racing experience.
MODULE 5
Hindquarter control and stops
Now that you have shoulder control and your horse travelling in frame, it's time to take control of the hindquarters. These lessons include:
- Hindquarter control from the ground and saddle
- From travers to flying changes - the importance of hindquarter control
- Teaching stop on the ground and under saddle
- Teaching backup in a straight line and on an angle
These lessons give you independent hindquarter and shoulder control, leading into lateral work and those more difficult manoeuvres.
MODULE 6
Trailer Loading
OTT horses are often only accostomed to loading into a truck and I know you're going to want to get out into the world. In these lessons, you’ll learn the following:
- Teach your horse to load onto the trailer safely, quietly and confidently every time
You’ll finish this module with the tools you need to get out with your horse and enjoy yourselves.
MODULE 7
The canter
The canter has a module all of its own because there are a number of elements to put together. In these lessons, you’ll learn:
- How to pick up the correct lead
- What to do about the horse that kicks out or bucks
- How to address rushing into and falling out of canter
The long-reining work you did earlier will be very useful in these canter lessons.

NICE TO MEET YOU
I'm Dr Kate Fenner
I'm an equine scientist and researcher with a PhD in horse behaviour and training. I have equestrian coaching and horse training qualifications. I have ridden, trained and competed in Dressage, Jumping, Western and polo in Australia, Europe, USA and Asia.
After years of experience starting horses for clients, I feel strongly that owners are best served by learning to train their own horses. As a result, I founded Kandoo Equine and have developed a series of evidence-based, easy-to-follow, step-by-step lessons that are suitable for horses and riders of all levels.
"I love Kandoo! I wouldn’t be able to train my four horses on my own without it. For the cost if roughly 7 or 8 weekly local lessons, you get permanently personally taught how to train your horse by one of the worlds premier horse trainers and horse behavior scientist.
Kate is always available for questions and problem solving and also gives specific tips and analysis of any videos you send in. The Kandoo community is full of kind, fun loving and extremely knowledge people who befriend every member of the group as if they were forever friends. It is also a gift to get to know such fabulous people around the world."
"I just want to say joining Kandoo Training is the best thing I've done for me and my horses in many years ....my only wish is that I'd found you sooner :)
I love the fact I can dip in and out when we are I'm ready to move on to the next stage or to find answers when I get stuck so I can be clearer with my communication or just to catch up on all the webinars and info you put out there....love it and if you ever come back to the UK I'll be signing up to come see you!!"
"Thanks again for taking the time to chat today Kate! I love the confidence I am gaining from all you are teaching me. It is so wonderful to be excited to head off to the paddock to see my horse, knowing I have a plan of what I am going to be working on with her. I love that even if I only have 15 minutes to work with her...I know those 15 minutes will be productive for both me and my horse.
Thanks again 😊"
"I can't believe the changes this has already made in my horse. She is really listening and I think ENJOYING the training - and so am I!"
"Hi Kate, you are amazing!!! Thank you for all that you do and words can not describe how much you have helped me through my journey recently!"
"Let me congratulate you as you have built probably the best online horse training course in the world! An amazing wealth of practical and useful information! "
